FAQs
Questions, answered
Everything you might want to know about Village for Mama, the book and Your Postpartum Village.
Your Postpartum Village
Is Your Postpartum Village free?
Yes. Every mama can set up her village, share her invite and coordinate meal drops for free, with unlimited villagers. The Whole Village ($79 AUD, one-time) unlocks every support category, a 90-day gathering, 100+ postpartum recipes, the Postpartum Planning Guide and the Fill Your Freezer planner.
Do I need to download an app?
No. It works in the browser on your phone or computer, so there's nothing to install. You can add it to your home screen so it opens like any other app.
How does it work?
You sign up, set your gathering window around your due date and share your invite link. Family, friends and neighbours see where help is needed (meal drops, school runs, errands, visits) and claim what they can do. You see who's doing what and when, and everyone gets reminders automatically.
Is it only for meals?
No. Meals are just one part of postpartum support. Your village can also help with errands, childcare, school runs, appointments, household help, visits and more.
How is it different from Meal Train?
Meal Train is designed for many life events. Your Postpartum Village was built specifically for postpartum, with support categories, recipes, reminders and resources designed around the real needs of mothers in the fourth trimester.
What if I don't have a big village?
It can still help. Some mamas use it with a large community around them, others with just a partner, a close family member or a few trusted friends. Even mapping out your support ahead of time can make the fourth trimester feel more manageable.
What if my baby comes early or late?
Change your start date any time in Settings. Your villagers see the new dates automatically.
Can my partner or a practitioner help manage my village?
Yes. Invite your partner, mum or doula as a co-pilot and they can add support, message your villagers and manage your calendar for you, so you can rest.
Is my data private?
Yes. Your village is only visible to people you invite with your private link, and we never sell or share your data. See our privacy policy.
About Village for Mama
What is Village for Mama?
Village for Mama is a resource dedicated to supporting new mothers during the postpartum period. We offer our renowned recipe book with practical recipe gift cards, Your Postpartum Village app, digital recipe books and postpartum resources, all to help gather community support so mothers receive the nourishment and care they need.
How did Village for Mama start?
Village for Mama was founded by Leila Armour during her own postpartum period, after she was inspired by an interview with Dr Oscar Serrallach. She recognised the lack of support for mothers during the postpartum period and created Village for Mama to address this gap, focusing on community and nourishment. Read our story.
What makes Village for Mama different from other postpartum resources?
We believe that the last place new mothers should be is in the kitchen. All the postpartum pillars (rest, recovery and nourishment) rely on support. Our approach combines practical recipes with community-building tools, which not only nourish new mothers but encourage friends and family to actively take part in postpartum care, fostering a modern village of support.
Who can benefit from Village for Mama?
New mothers, second-time mums, more-time mums, doulas, midwives and anyone in the motherhood care sphere. Our resources are for anyone looking to support new mothers during the crucial fourth trimester.
What is the fourth trimester?
We often call the time after birth the ‘postpartum period’, a Western medical term for the roughly six weeks it takes for a mother's hormones and uterus to return to their non-pregnant state. Then, despite it taking nine months to grow a baby, new mothers are expected to ‘bounce back’ and move on.
The fourth trimester is the three months following birth. It originally described the baby adjusting to life outside the womb, but it's now more commonly used for a mother's transition into motherhood, when mother and baby are as vulnerable as one another. It is a critical time for her physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.
Who endorses Village for Mama?
Village for Mama is endorsed by respected professionals including Dr Oscar Serrallach and midwife Luka McCabe, and is recommended by midwives and doulas around Australia.
The book
What's included in the Village for Mama recipe book?
30 nourishing recipes designed for postpartum. Each recipe comes with a gift card, with practical tips that encourage friends and family to cook for the new mother.
How can I buy the book?
Directly from our shop, or from one of our stockists around Australia, New Zealand and the UK. You can find them on our Stockists page.
Are the recipes suitable for all dietary preferences?
Our recipes are designed to be adaptable, with suggestions for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free diets. Our One Handed Bites for Postpartum and Beyond ebook has a very limited range of vegan recipes.
Can the book be given as a gift?
Absolutely! It makes a thoughtful, practical gift for a new mother, and the gift cards make a wonderful activity at a baby shower or mother's blessing. We can also send a gift-wrapped copy with a handwritten card for you. Just leave a note at checkout.
Is the book available as an ebook?
Not the printed book. We see it as more of a resource than a recipe book, and the recipe cards and door sign don't translate to digital. All of its recipes are included digitally in The Whole Village, though.
Postpartum care
Why is postpartum care important?
A mother's wellbeing is crucial to the health of future generations, which is why supporting her in the fourth trimester is just as important as during pre-conception and pregnancy. Unfortunately, many mothers today navigate this time without the community support they need.
During pregnancy a woman's body prioritises her baby, even growing a whole new organ, the placenta. This can leave new mothers depleted just as motherhood begins. New parents typically lose around 1,500 hours of sleep in the first year, and breastfeeding mothers spend around 1,800 hours feeding. If a mother doesn't get enough nutrients, her body draws on its own reserves to make sure her breastmilk is enough for her baby. Proper nourishment, rest and emotional support make a real difference to her physical and mental health.
What are the key aspects of postpartum care?
Support, rest, warmth, proper recovery, nourishment and hydration. Our resources include a deep dive into these postpartum pillars to help you enjoy a well-supported, well-nourished fourth trimester.
How can friends and family support a new mother?
By preparing nourishing meals, helping with household jobs, caring for older children and offering emotional support. Your Postpartum Villagemakes it easy to coordinate, and the book makes a beautiful baby shower or mother's blessing gift.
What challenges do new mothers commonly face?
Physical recovery, breastfeeding difficulties, sleep deprivation, hormonal changes and feelings of isolation. A strong support system can help ease many of them.
How do the recipes support postpartum nutrition?
They're designed to provide the nutrients needed for postpartum recovery, focusing on nutrient-dense ingredients that support healing, breastfeeding and the overall wellbeing of mamas.
