Our Story
The Birth of Village for Mama
Village for Mama emerged from a profound realisation: the postpartum period, or more importantly, the fourth trimester, is a critical yet under-recognised and appreciated time in a mother’s journey.
Founded by Leila Armour, our mission is to bridge the gap in postpartum care by fostering a supportive and nourishing community for new mothers.
This mission is based on the belief that the early weeks of motherhood are not just a challenge to be managed, but a pivotal experience that deserves care and attention.
Leila’s insight into the vital need for better postpartum support was shaped by her own experiences as a first-time mother.
Then while driving to the gym, she heard a podcast interview with Dr. Oscar Serrallach, whose insights into postpartum care struck a deep chord.
This moment ignited a spark that grew into a passionate commitment to support other mothers.
Empowered by this vision, Leila gathered her village of local women and mothers. Together, they transformed her initial concept into something distinctively unique.
Village for Mama became more than just a cookbook; it was the first of its kind to include recipe gift cards, creating a tangible way for loved ones to offer practical support to new mothers. Each recipe and card in the collection is carefully designed to nurture mothers during their postpartum period, providing not only sustenance but also a sense of connection and community.
Our Mission
At Village for Mama, we're here to nourish, and support new mothers by fostering a sense of community.
We believe in the power of collective care, where friends, family, and the larger community come together to support mothers during their transition into motherhood and beyond.
Our unique postpartum recipe book, infused with practical recipe gift cards, is a tangible tool that helps rally this support system.
Meet Our Founder
Leila Armour
Hello there! I’m Leila Armour.
To me, food is my love language, a way to connect and care for others, especially when they need it most.
My journey into the world of motherhood and postpartum care is anything but conventional.
Life is full of surprises, and one of mine came on a day that started just like any other at my Mexican cantina. That was until a handsome Scandinavian pirate-looking man walked in, picked up the traditional wooden cross hanging on the wall, and in a thick Scottish accent asked, ‘Is this a sword?’ Well, the rest, as they say, was history. We now have three beautiful children – a daughter and fraternal twin boys.
But let’s rewind a tiny bit.
6 years ago, I was dreaming about trading my bustling Mexican cantina for the adventurous life on a boat with the new found pirate. However, the universe had other plans.
The day I closed the doors on my cantina was the day I discovered motherhood was on the horizon.
Pregnancy opened up a vast, new world for me, and I dove headfirst into learning everything I could about it.
While there’s a wealth of information out there on pregnancy and raising children, I noticed a significant gap in the narrative – very little was said about the post-birth experience for mothers.
This realisation became my motivation to change the narrative and shine a light on the importance of the postpartum period.
With Village for Mama, I set out to highlight how crucial our close-knit support network – our ‘village’ – is in shaping this transformative journey.
That spark of inspiration grew into Village for Mama: Nourishment for the Fourth Trimester. This project is much more than a collection of recipes, it’s a lovingly crafted guide to nurturing new mothers, complete with 30 nourishing recipes and thoughtful gift cards. Each gift card includes a personal letter from me, aimed at illuminating the often-overlooked postpartum phase and the critical role our village plays during this transformative time.
Today, I wear many hats: mama, author, postpartum doula, and nutrition consultant. At the core of all these roles, my mission remains to support and empower mothers everywhere.
I am deeply proud of how Village for Mama has grown and evolved. Starting as a spark of inspiration with a four-month-old strapped to me, it has become a beacon of support for countless mothers navigating the challenging yet beautiful journey of motherhood.
Every story shared and every meal prepared from our recipes serves as a reminder of the vital role our community plays in the postpartum period.
Looking to the future, my vision is to continue nurturing and expanding Village for Mama as a resource hub, enriching it further to meet the evolving needs of new mothers everywhere. We are committed to enhancing our offerings, ensuring that every mother who joins our village feels supported, empowered, and understood.
Through Village for Mama, we aim to celebrate the profound journey of motherhood, making sure every mother knows she is not alone. Here, we grow together, supported by the strength and warmth of our beautiful village.
