Village for Postpartum

From the very beginning of Village for Mama (5 years ago!) my mission has been to help you gather your village. To help you gather your friends and family around to support you through the gift of homemade meals.

As I soaked up my own postpartum with the twins last year I had the most amazing support of my village. Both personal and professional. I couldn’t have navigated those early weeks by myself.

I was inundated with messages as I shared my journey with recommendations for postpartum doulas and the likes both near and far.

So I created a postpartum doula directory in my highlights to help connect mamas around Australia with love and support while tandem feeding the twins day and night.

It’s been a while in the making, slowly coming to life amongst juggling the twins first year of life, launching one handed bites and all the other twists and turns that come with running a business while raising small children.

With the village of mamas I have gathered over the past 5 years and the incredible women and mothers I have connected with in the Postpartum space, I wanted to create a space where the two can connect.

Where mothers can find the help they need and practitioners can continue to share their love and passion for mothers in those vulnerable early months.

This directory is a stepping stone between the Village for Mama book and what’s to come with Village as we grow.

I’m so grateful for everyone who has been part of this big beautiful village and I can’t wait to share more about Village for Postpartum.

Because it’s not just for mamas, it’s for all you incredible women and mamas in the postpartum space. Because you need a village too.

I think one of the biggest missed opportunities fo

I think one of the biggest missed opportunities for modern mothers are baby showers.

We gather friends and family around, we feed them, play daft games, give gifts for the baby, make jokes about never sleeping again, dads favourite pub burning down and are you sure it’s not twins and then say can’t wait to meet them and head off on our merry way.

Having your friends and family all together celebrating the baby is such a missed opportunity to put your hand up and say, hey village, this is going to be a huge transition for our growing family and we would love for you to support us.

I think mother’s blessings are the most underrated form of postpartum planning.

A postpartum mother can’t postpartum herself. The foundation of postpartum care is SUPPORT. Without adequate support, new mums cannot embrace postpartum the way they deeply need to.

A mother’s blessing allows mothers to be vulnerable. To be held and to be heard. It’s an opportunity to share how they envision their postpartum and for their loved ones to be there to support them on their journey. An opportunity to call in the people you love and trust and want to be part of your postpartum.

They don’t have to be ‘spiritual’ or ‘woo woo’ but women have been gathering in circle across cultures and generations and there so much to be gained from embracing this huge rite of passage.

These beautiful images are from a recent mother’s blessing where we gathered to celebrate a maiden in our village. It was one of the most moving Blessings I have been to and it just echoed the power of this ritual and how important it is to really hold a mother before she walks into birth and begins her journey into motherhood.

I’m also about to launch Village For Postpartum - an online postpartum directory to help women all over Australia find their village of support including Mother’s Blessing facilitators.

For Father’s Day I wanted to both celebrate the incredible men we get to do this parenting gig with and shine a light on the impact that dads can have on postpartum.

I thought I would ask some of my favourite mums on the ‘gram to ask their other halves for some wisdom and advice. I didn’t want to over complicate things so I settled on two simple questions. Their responses are filled with honesty, warmth, and invaluable insights that every new dad can benefit from.

First up: What do you wish someone told you about postpartum?

I think the more open communication between dads about how they are feeling, the changes and challenges they are facing, the better equipped dads are to show up for their partners and to thrive in family life.

In my latest journal, I dive into why vulnerability is actually a strength for new mums—and how asking for help isn’t just about lightening your load, but about deepening your relationships and fostering a stronger more connected community.

In fact by not asking for help, you are doing your village a disservice.

Neuroscience shows that acts of compassion and helping others trigger the release of feel-good chemicals in the brain, like dopamine and serotonin, creating what’s known as the “helper’s high.”

When you ask someone to assist you, you’re giving them the opportunity to experience this!

Raising twins, and toddlers for that matter is hard work. It’s beautiful, hilarious and exhausting chaos. Most days you are barely surviving – juggling tantrums, sleepless nights, and endless to-do lists. It’s so easy to get caught up in the frustrations and challenges.

But sometimes, the best thing you can do is take a step back and zoom out. Remind yourself that they are only this little once.

You can’t always fix or change the hard days, but you can shift how you feel about them. Sometimes a little mental reframe is all you need to get you through to bed time.. before you have to (get to) wake up and do it all again.

I swear they make them extra cute at this age to increase your tolerance and help you get through.

And a reminder to all the mamas, you’re doing an amazing job. 🌟

When your baby breastfeeds, their saliva is drawn back into the nipple, sending signals to your body about their immune needs. This incredible communication system allows your body to adjust your breastmilk, delivering the perfect mix of antibodies to your babe.

It was learning about the magic of our bodies and breastfeeding that helped me persevere through the early challenges of breastfeeding.

Our bodies are so innately wise and in tune with our babies. Motherly intuition takes time to tune in but it’s so powerful. And it’s why we need to be there to hold, support and empower new mamas as they learn their baby and find their feet in motherhood.

This month I am 17 months into tandem feeding the twins so I thought for World Breastfeeding Week I’d share something that I rarely see talked about… breastfeeding twins.

In fact most people told me it was too hard basket. Yes it’s challenging but you can absolutely exclusively breastfeed twins.

Here are my top 6 tips for tandem feeding twins

🥥🥥 Invest in a Good Supportive Tandem Feeding Pillow
A game-changer for comfort and support. The right pillow can save your back and held with positioning and latch.

🥥🥥 Gather your Support Village
Have a Lactation Consultant ready and lean on friends and family. You need extra sets of hands while you find your feet.

🥥🥥 Master Each Baby’s Latch Individually
Try and work on each latch before tandem feeding, you don’t want to be stuck with two damaged nipples.

🥥🥥 Keep Snacks and Water Handy
Create feeding stations with drinks and snacks. You can’t move with twins like you can with one baby, it’s thirsty work and you need nourishment too.

🥥🥥 You Don’t Need to Track or Schedule
especially if you don’t want to! Let your babies lead and find their groove. Each baby is individual and getting to know them takes time.

🥥🥥 Be Kind to Yourself
Celebrate small victories and be gentle with yourself. It gets easier.
